What is Node.js? JavaScript on the Server Explained

Introduction

Node.js is a runtime environment that allows developers to run JavaScript outside the browser. It is mainly used for building backend applications, APIs, and servers.

Before Node.js, JavaScript was mostly used only inside web browsers for frontend development.

Why JavaScript Was Originally Browser-Only

JavaScript was created to make web pages interactive.

For example:

  • Button clicks

  • Form validation

  • Image sliders

  • Dynamic content updates

Browsers like:

  • Google Chrome

provided environments where JavaScript could run.

So JavaScript mainly worked on the client side (browser side).
